The Battersea Arts Centre is one of the UK's leading innovative theatre and performance spaces.
TILT was commissioned to re-imagine a derelict industrial kitchen in the building as a unique set of offices.
Keen to preserve and re-discover the Victorian elements of the room while also implementing a state of the art office space, TILT designed and installed a range of complimentary and contradictory works.
For example, large chalkboards, a feature of the original working kitchen, were installed, and the original white tiling was preserved or mended. The steel of the kitchen surfaces was also reintroduced to support the furniture in the form of studding while OSB board was used for the furniture itself.
The shelving units themselves embrace the tiles and structures of the old room, their infeasible height highlighting the services that were left to hang in the air, some still in use others retired.
