We’re preparing for Sunday and thinking about how our design approach needs to incorporate the outside, create shade, work with the desert landscape and maximise smart water usage. Unlike a lot of coworking spaces we’ve worked on it may be that here 40% is external space. How will those thresholds work? The transitions between the inside and outside? What will happen in those spaces? Really exciting questions for the community to engage with on Sunday.

We’re using a lot of re-claimed and re-used material for the Festival Village. Not least from the myriad storerooms and forgotten corners of the Southbank Centre. Each item will be named after the place opens and you’ll be able to see the legacy of various pieces. If you’re in the know you’ll recognise these classic designs. Here on the right we’ve a chair remade for the 50 year celebrations for the Festival Of Britain, in the middle a chair we found in Rat City, a cavernous store below the Imax cinema, and on the left a chair saved from a big clear out that magically appeared after our Chair Hunt call out. Altogether, 70 chairs in these three classic styles. Thank you Miranda Terry for the picture. Continue to stay in touch with the project and come down if you’re free.

A diverse range attended, from architects and stencil artists to Southbank Volunteers and staff. If you couldn’t make it, please go here to look at the Give Get activity we did, to see what the project can offer you and what you could do in return. We’re preparing for the Co-design Day on February 18th and we’re looking forward to seeing you there. We’ll begin designing the space, looking at amongst other things the aspirations of the space, spatial narrative, and look and feel. We’ll be prototyping directly in the space too, modelling and testing activity and location. It’ll be a lot of fun.
